Women with breast implants have an increased risk of developing anaplastic large cell lymphoma compared to those without breast implants

A deadly cancer associated with breast implants has been found in women in the United States (US). The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said in a statement that at least 457 women in the United States have so far been diagnosed with anaplastic large cell lymphoma or anaplastic large cell lymphoma.

Of these, nine of them have died from rare cancers that affect cells in the immune system and can be found around breast implants. Women with breast implants have an increased risk of developing anaplastic large cell lymphoma, compared to women who do not have breast implants.

"We want all health care providers to be aware especially in patients with new swelling, lumps, or pain around breast implants, to speed up the diagnosis of malignancy. We also ask health care providers to report to FDA cases of Associated Breast Implants - Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma "(BIA-ALCL) in patients with breast implants. This includes reporting each case and the level you might experience as long as you practice," the FDA said in a warning letter to doctors as reported by CNN.

Most cases of cancer occur in people who have textured surfaces on their implants, not on smooth surfaces. This disease grows slowly and can be treated when detected early. When the breast implant is placed in the body, it will be inserted behind the breast tissue or under the chest muscle.

Over time, a fibrous scar called a capsule develops around the implant, separating it from the rest of the breast. In patients with breast implants, BIA-ALCL cases reported are generally found adjacent to the implant itself and contained in fibrous capsules. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the Plastic Surgeon Foundation, around 10 million to 11 million women in the world have breast implants.

The FDA first increased the likelihood of disease in 2011, that there was a small but significant risk of developing cancer after breast implants. They asked the doctor whether they saw any changes in their patients and urged women to check for symptoms such as fluid buildup or the mass around their implants. Symptoms of cancer also include swelling and redness around the breast implant.

The FDA warned people who were considering surgery to do research and discuss with their surgeons the risks and benefits of textured implants and smooth surfaces. It is said, those who have breast implants must monitor it for each change and get regular screening such as a mammogram or MRI.
