Intention to make 'Snake Wine', Men in China are even critical of getting venom

A 63-year-old man from East China is in critical condition after being bitten by a venomous snake while he was trying to catch a snake to make beer from its venom.

Newsweek reported that the man, surnamed Yu, had to undergo emergency treatment to save his arm. After being bitten, Yu was rushed to Hangzhou Hospital in Zhejiang province following an incident reported by a neighbor.

Yu was taking a walk after lunch when his neighbors saw a poisonous snake outside his house. The species is known as the Chinese Copperhead or 'hundred-step snake', which indicates the number of steps a victim can take before succumbing to the venom.

Yu first wanted to kill the snake with a shovel but changed his mind at the last minute and decided to catch it to make wine from the snake's venom. Unfortunately, when he decided to take the venomous snake and put it in the sack, it bit his right wrist.

Snake venom wine is made by putting a whole snake in a jar of rice wine or other alcohol. Another way is to drink snake blood that has been mixed with bile and alcohol.

Yu tried to suck out the poison and wash the wound with clean water, but soon after, his gums started bleeding, and his lips went numb. Soon he developed symptoms including tightness in his chest and difficulty breathing.

Luckily, although his right arm is swollen, Yu's condition is said to be stable for now. The hospital did not say when he would be discharged.
