Chocolate Can Be A Cough Drug, More Effective Than Syrup

Research has found the potential of chocolate can relieve cough symptoms. Although the chocolate in question is not a type of bar, it is cocoa powder which is the basic ingredient in making chocolate.

Launching from Tech Times, January 17, 2019, Alyn Morice and colleagues from the University of Hull in Yorkshire, England, explored the efficacy of cocoa-based treatments. They involved 163 respondents with acute cough, who generally also packaged with cold, flu, or severe bronchitis.

In the study called Rococo Study, respondents were randomly prescribed with ordinary cough syrup and CS1002, a drug containing cocoa.

For two days, patients taking chocolate-based drugs improved significantly compared to those who received regular cough medicines.

CS1002, which has since been licensed under the brand name Unicough, also reduces the frequency of coughing and sleep disturbances in two days.
Of the participants who received cocoa-based drugs, almost a quarter stopped taking medication after their condition improved.

"Although the primary endpoint was not achieved, CS1002 was associated with a greater reduction in the frequency of coughs, sleep disturbances and improvement in health status compared with SL," the researchers wrote in their study, published at the BMJ Open in January 2017.

The researchers argue that the efficacy of cocoa is thicker and more sticky than standard drugs. Chocolate forms a layer in the throat that helps protect nerve endings that are known to trigger coughing.

Another study by Morice and colleagues showed that theobromine extracted from cocoa can inhibit the action of sensory nerves that are known to trigger cough reflexes.
