Wow! Hospital Wrong Amputation of Patient's Feet Due to Mistaken Sign
An Austrian hospital mistakenly amputated a patient's leg some time ago. This is considered a 'tragic mistake' caused by humans.
Based on information from the Freistadt Clinic, the patient did suffer from several diseases. His previous illness affected his leg, so his left leg had to be amputated.
"On Tuesday, we were very surprised. Despite quality assurance standards, the wrong leg (not the one that had to be amputated) of the 82-year-old man... was amputated," the clinic said.
According to the clinic, the amputation error was only discovered when the patient's bandage was changed on Thursday morning. The amputation error is thought to have occurred before the operation, when the leg to be amputated was marked.
"Unfortunately an error occurred, in which the right leg was amputated instead of the left. This was the result of a series of unfortunate circumstances," he said.
Currently, the clinic is investigating what happened and will review the standard of health care at their place.
Meanwhile, the patient will be given psychological assistance and still have to undergo further surgery to remove his left leg from the middle thigh.
"The operation will be scheduled soon," he concluded.
