Too Much Sleep Is at Risk for Heart Disease
Watch out for those who sleep too much. Because the activity of this one is at great risk of heart disease.
Adults who sleep too much are at high risk of heart disease and death. This is based on a study involving 117,000 adults aged 35 to 70 years in 21 countries and the study was conducted almost eight years.
WebMd reported, heart disease such as stroke or heart failure was found in 7.8 per 1,000 people because they slept for 6-8 hours per night, compared with 8.4 per 1,000 among those who slept 8 to 9 hours.
Meanwhile, 10.4 per 1,000 among those who slept 9 to 10 hours, and 14.8 per 1,000 among those who slept more than 10 hours a night.
The findings translated into 5%, 17% and 41% increased risk. The rate among people who sleep 6 hours or less overnight is 9.4 per 1,000, or 9% higher than those who sleep as recommended. However, Chuangshi Wang, McMaster and Peking Union Medical College, China said, this number was not statistically significant.
The increased risk of heart disease and death in people who sleep more than the recommended amount may be because they have basic health problems that cause them to sleep longer.
The study, published in the European Heart Journal also found napping was associated with an increased risk of heart disease and death.
"Although the findings were very interesting they did not prove cause and effect," said Julie Ward, senior heart nurse at the British Heart Foundation, who was not involved in the study.
"Instead of long sleep causes death or poor health, but poor health causes an increase in sleep," explained Francesco Cappuccio, professor of cardiovascular and epidemiological medicine, University of Warwick, England.
