Everyone must have felt sad, especially when left by a loved one, breaking up and so forth. But there are still many that equate sadness and depression.
Though both have fundamental differences. A psychologist and writer, Guy Winch, says that sadness is a normal human emotion.

"We've all experienced it. Sadness is usually triggered by events, experiences, or situations that are difficult, painful, challenging, or disappointing," he said.
In other words, continued Winch, someone tends to feel sad because of something. This also means that when something changes, the emotional pain fades, the sadness disappears.

In addition, Marwa Azab, associate professor of psychology at California State University, Long Beach, said sadness was a healthy response to any kind of loss, disappointing results, or painful comments.
However, unlike the case with sadness, depression is actually an abnormal emotional state. This is a mental illness that affects the way of thinking, feeling, and behaving.

"When we are depressed, we feel sad about everything. Depression does not always require events or difficult situations, loss, or changes in circumstances as triggers. In fact, it often occurs without such triggers," Winch said on the Health 24 page.

When a person experiences depression, it affects every part of life. Things that have felt good are no longer fun, they drain energy and motivation. It makes impatience, irritability, and failure.
